During the American throwing series Oklahoma Throwing Tour last night the former world champion from 2019 hit the ninth longest throw of all time.
In strongly favorable, windy conditions, Yaime Perez reached the discus 73.09 meters. A new world best and the longest throw of all time by someone outside of Europe.
– Impressive that she can control the strong wind. But with the strong wind force on an open field, it becomes like a different sport, says expert Alhaji Jeng.
Best of all time outside of Europe
Before the competition, Perez had never thrown over 70 meters – the longest she had thrown was 69.39 meters.
But last night she threw over the dream line three times again. Only throwers from East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria have thrown longer.
The last time someone threw that far was in 1989 when East Germany’s Ilke Wyludda threw 74.56 meters.
May miss the Olympics
The throw makes her a favorite for the Olympic gold this summer – but there is a risk that she will not participate. Perez has fled from Cuba and is no longer part of the national team.
Swedish runner-up all-time Vanessa Kamga also threw at the competitions in Ramona. The longest was 59.77 meters in her three throws.
Next night, Daniel Ståhl’s competitor Mykolas Alekna throws in the same arena.
