Athletics: Jekaterina Poistogova-Guliyev Loses Olympic silver twelve years later

This after Russian anti-doping authorities suspended her for four years after retesting doping samples.

The 33-year-old, who then competed for Russia but who later switched to Turkey, has had all his results between July 2012 and October 2014 struck out due to the use of banned substances, writes Reuters.

According to Rusaf, Poistogova-Guliyev is being punished for the period of 2012 and 2013. She finished third but was upgraded to second after compatriot Maria Savinova was stripped of her Olympic gold after a positive doping test.

Was suspended for a game

In connection with the revelation of state-sponsored Russian doping in 2015, Wada recommended that Poistogova-Guliyev be banned for life. In 2017, the Russian-Turkish was banned for two years by the arbitration court Cas but it was only backdated to 2015 and she was able to keep her Olympic silver.

As the 2017 suspension counts, Poistogova-Guliyev will be free to compete again in 2026 should she wish.

The middle distance races on the women’s side in London 2012 were heavily marked by doping. Three runners in the 800 meters and five runners in the 1,500 meters later fixed.

It is the IOC that will make the final decision regarding Poistogova-Guliyev’s medal in the London Olympics.
