Tamberi was already in trouble at 2.29, where he broke two jumps. But then he took 2.31 in the first, and the gold was then secured when Ukraine’s Vladyslav Lavskyy broke through in 2.33.
Reigning Olympic and World Cup winner Tamberi then asked to clear the bar 2.34 – which he managed on the first attempt, becoming the European who jumped the highest this year.

– I knew I was in good shape, but as it was the first competition of the summer for me, I made some mistakes. But I got a lot of help from the audience here. If I hadn’t managed to win, I would never have forgiven myself, says Tamberi to SVT Sport.
He then celebrated in an odd way to say the least, to show how he can jump so high. See it in the clip above.
– It was some kind of joke. Do something for the people, says Tamberi.
Tamberi then also set a new championship record, when he managed 2.37 in the first attempt.
