– The final was an emotional rollercoaster that started with the fall in the first round and that I took the lead in the last, which shows that God is a faithful guide, says Ogunleye to SVT Sport.
Wesche’s final shot sparked controversy. No camera caught the impact and the officials had a long way to go to the impact mark where there were a lot of holes from previous rounds. That gave rise to speculation that it was measured from the wrong place.
But the result recorded at Wesche was 19.68 and 25-year-old Ogunleye ran out to the bell and rang a couple of times to celebrate the gold, which was her first major championship title.
– I hadn’t given up hope of taking the gold because it’s not over until after the last push but today I wasn’t meant to win but I can’t ask for more, says Wesche who set a personal record with 19.86 – a improvement by five centimeters.
Roo’s seventh – just like Ståhl
Fanny Roos finished seventh just like partner Daniel Ståhl in the discus. The Swede ran 18.78 and improved significantly from the qualifier.
– You always want to push further, but I am satisfied with my seventh place in terms of what I did compared to the others during the season, says Roos to SVT Sport.
During yesterday’s qualifier, Roos scored 18.17 and went to the final as tenth. Sarah Mitton won the qualifier in 19.77 but crashed out with 17.48 today and finished last in twelfth.
Axelina Johansson hit 18.03 in her first push, which was the only approved one of the three she did, in the rain that marked the beginning of the competition. She finished tenth in her Olympic debut.
