Athletics: Engla Nilsson abstains the indoor World Cup in China after the European bronze

The 19-year-old debutant in the championship impressed greatly in the women’s high jump final by securing bronze medal. Now she chooses to refrain from the indoor World Cup in athletics in Chinese Nanjing, March 21-23, 2025, instead to invest in the Tokyo World Cup.

– My coach and I have chosen to refrain from the World Cup in China to focus more on the outdoor season. There is a World Cup in Tokyo that I am extremely interested in participating in. I have had a fairly long and intense indoor season, so to end it at the top felt just right, she says.

Nilsson passed 1.92 meters without any misses, which meant that she improved her personal record by three centimeters compared to the qualification earlier this week.

– It feels incredible, and although three centimeters do not sound much, it is actually a big improvement. It felt good with 1.92, but it is important not to stress, so I will reach even higher, says Nilsson.

Nilsson: “Cool”

The Kungälvs girl has been hailed by both the league captain Kajsa Bergqvist and the world record holder as well as gold medalist Jaroslava Mahutjich from Ukraine. Mahutjich praises the 19-year-old and thinks it is exciting that more new names appear in the high jump.

– It feels incredible because she probably didn’t know who I was before, but that she still noticed me, which feels cool. Those words mean a lot to me, says the 19-year-old.
