Athletics: Andreas Almgren clears the 10,000 meters at the Olympics: “A broken tibia”

Andreas Almgren was previously entered in both the 10,000 meters and 5,000 meters at the Olympics in Paris.

Now he is ironing out the 10,000 meters and at a press conference the national team captain Kajsa Bergqvist tells that it is an injury problem.

  • – It’s a tibia that has messed up a bit. He has lost some training and had to drive alternatively, she says.

Almgren has undergone several x-ray examinations but received positive information that it is not a serious injury such as a stress fracture.

Worried it was a stress fracture

    – He was worried about that at the beginning, Bergqvist describes Almgren’s feelings.

According to the plan, Almgren is to start running training again on Monday. Due to the long injury layoff, Almgren will only run 5,000 meters, partly because it comes later in the championship and it is less tiring.

Gets five additional days of rest

Almgren was EC fourth in the 10,000 meters in Rome, a race that was decided on June 12. 10,000 meters in the Olympics, where there is a final directly, will be decided on August 2. The trial of 5,000 meters will be decided on the morning of August 7.

He has the Swedish record for the distance with a time of 26.52.87, which he beat in March this year. That record had stood since 1989 and he beat it by over a minute.

Marathon runner Suldan Hassan has had to take a break due to a tear in his calf, but is back in training.
