The winner and runner-up in the Olympic final in London, Asli Cakir Alptekin and Gamze Bulut, have previously been caught for doping and stripped of their medals. Aregawi was therefore moved up to third and had to celebrate his bronze in Paris during a ceremony in connection with this summer’s Olympics.
But now it looks like that medal may be getting an upgrade.
Doping samples have been tested again
Today, the sports court of arbitration, Cas, came down with a hard verdict against the Russian Tatjana Tomachova, who originally finished fourth in the race – but after the two suspensions was moved up to second place.
Tomachova is suspended for ten years when two doping tests she gave in 2012 were tested again, and showed traces of an anabolic steroid.
Cas has also decided that all of Tomacova’s results from June 21, 2012 to January 2015 (a time period that included the Olympics, among other things) must be deleted.
This means that Abeba Aregawi, who competed for Ethiopia during the 2012 Olympics and six months later began to represent Sweden, is currently the second best from the race that has not been washed, and is believed to mean that she can get a silver medal.
SVT Sport has applied to the IOC.
