Athletics: Ababa Aregawi is aiming for both the European Championships and the World Cup for Sweden

Ababa Aregawi has not competed in a Swedish national team dress since 2015. But now she opens for a comeback.

– I’m aiming to compete at both the upcoming European Championships and the World Cup in Japan this summer, she says in a Press release.

This past weekend she beat the Swedish record on half marathon with almost two minutes in Portugal. She has previously set a Swedish record but did not then belong to a Swedish association, she did now, Aregawi competed for the friends of runners IF.

– We welcome Ababa back to the national team. First, however, she must fulfill World Athletics criteria, which apply to all active ones who come back after such a long break, says the union captain Kajsa Bergqvist.

When we see her in the next race is not yet determined.

– In the future, I plan to invest in 5000 meters, both on track and road, 10,000 meters, half marathons and marathons.

The 34-year-old was tested positively for doping in 2016 but was already released the same year. She never competed for Sweden again but instead canceled her elite venture and raised children.

So now she is investing in a definitive comeback.

– It is extremely impressive to come back after so long away and run on such a world time, says Bergqvist.
