Athletes were wheeled away from the sweltering heat of the

Athletics World Championships 19.8.–27.8. Ylen channels. See the schedule and broadcast information of the games at this link.

What are we talking about?

The scorching heat has been one of the topics of conversation at the World Championships in Budapest. Athletes have to work hard in temperatures of up to 35 degrees.

Women’s 400 meters USA Britton Wilson didn’t make it to the finish line and was wheeled away in a wheelchair. Australia won silver in the women’s 20 km walk Jaemina Montag threw up after finishing.

Also one of the top 400 meter athletes from the Bahamas Steven Gardiner was taken away in a wheelchair after the preliminaries.

In the preliminaries of the men’s 400-meter hurdles, several times we saw a situation where the runners who were in the race introductions were not on their own track as is typical.

However, the athletes had not withdrawn from the race, but were looking for shade from the scorching sun at the starting point.

Ingberg says that intense heat should no longer be a matter of surprise at athletics competitions. Last year’s World Championships in Oregon were agonizing with intense heat. Four years ago at the World Championships in Doha and two years ago at the Tokyo Olympics, the intense heat was also a challenge.

Ex javelin thrower Mikaela Ingberg was himself at the 1998 European Championships in Budapest.

– There were exactly the same problems then. At that time, however, the hotel did not have air conditioning and there was sweat all the time. We tried to get some sleep with cold gel and everything in the world, says Ingberg, who works as an expert for Urheilu at the World Cup.

In recent years, the athletes have gained a lot of experience in prestigious competitions. In addition to water, it is important for athletes to enjoy, for example, salt and keep wet towels around their necks, for example.

Race walkers have cold ice cubes.

– Often you just have to accept the heat. You have to look for Shade places and think about drinking.

– Back in the day, when it was 40 degrees even in the shade at the World Championships in Seville, there wasn’t much extra time outside. In terms of performance, it does not have such a big effect in speed-explosive sports. Athletes in more endurance sports suffer from it.

Who surprised?

In Ingberg’s opinion, Sunday’s absolute surprise was Canada, who won the moukari final Ethan Katzberg with a top score of 81.25. He already threw 80 meters in qualifying.

Even athletics people had not heard of the 21-year-old thrower before Budapest. Before the World Championships, his record was 78.73.

– These were his first adult competitions at the World Cup and Olympic level. He’s a young guy in that sport. Moukari is a sport where you can compete at a young age.

The Moukarisensation is coached by his countryman Dylan Armstrongthe Olympic bronze medalist in the shot put from 2008. He was coached by a top Ukrainian shot put thrower Anatoly Bondarchuk.

Who flopped?

On the contrary, Sunday’s biggest disappointment was the defending 100 meter world champion Fred Kerley. Kerley, who went to the World Championships with a big threat, was the first runner to be left out of the final race.

Actions and words did not match.

The streaming service Nexflix is making a behind-the-scenes series of athletics, starring Kerley, Noah Lyles mixed Dina Asher-Smith.

– Let’s see how this manifests in them. I don’t know if this series brought him pressure, Ingberg laughs.

What next?

One of the most awaited sports for Finnish spectators starts today, Monday, when the women’s pole vault is qualified for the finals. Going into the race as a medal favorite Wilma Murron vire is of interest to many.

In his general competition at the Kaleva Games, he made some great jumps with new flippers.

Seipää’s qualifying limit is 465, but typically you get to the final with a lower score.

For Murro, who has jumped 470 or more several times this summer, getting to the finals shouldn’t be a trick or anything.

What kind of things should a Finnish bench athlete pay attention to when watching Murro’s qualifying?

– Communication between him and the coach Jarno Koivunen with says a lot. We communicate about the step mark, the point of effort, the grip height or changing the blade.

– There are so many small factors involved in pole vaulting that have a surprisingly big impact on the result.

Tactics are also of great importance, although in Murro’s case it is basically related to the final race.

– Prize competitions also involve a lot of tactics. It’s worth its weight in gold to surpass someone’s height in the first one. Playing with height and crossing is what sets pole vault apart from many other sports.
