Eight children and one adult have died and 78 people have been hospitalized after eating sea turtle on the island of Pemba in Zanzibar off East Africa.
The animal’s flesh may contain a poison, which does not harm the turtle, but which can be fatal to humans. Sea turtle is seen as a delicacy but it is known that the meat can cause food poisoning.
Three years ago, seven people died on Pemba after eating sea turtle.
