At the World Championship in Excel, participants had to manage a WoW raid

In December 2024, the World Cup took place in Microsoft Excel. In Las Vegas, 12 leading Excel experts competed against each other in the final decisive battle. The final puzzle revolved around accompanying a squad of 20 players who set out on the WoW Classic raid “The Molten Core”. Excel with orcs, so to speak.

How were the participants identified? The whole thing is actually a longer process. The “Excel Esports Season 2024” began on January 25, 2024.

Another qualifying round took place in October.

The actual World Cup, the final round, took place in Las Vegas in December. The prize money was a delicious $5,000 and the right to rub it under the noses of every colleague for all eternity that you are the undisputed king of every office computer.

WoW Classic is popular right now, also in Excel:

Participants had to keep an accurate table of a raid group in WoW

What was the final task? MMORPGS fans took notice: The final task at the Excel Championships was about World of Warcraft Classic.

The Excel experts had to use a complicated spreadsheet to accompany the 20 players in a group in WoW Classic who were preparing for the “Molten Core” raid.

There were many problems to solve and questions to answer. In a video you can see which tasks were then given to just a few participants:

  • So the questions were about experience points and gold.
  • At the end 5 bonus questions were asked.
  • The video states that it is impossible to answer most of the later questions if you answer the early questions incorrectly.
  • To give the event a little more pizzazz, there was an “elimination mechanic”: Of the last 12 participants, the one furthest behind was eliminated from the tournament every 5 minutes. Then a juror tapped him on the shoulder and the dream was over.

This went on until after 30 minutes only 6 were still playing for the win.

A Canadian who sits in meetings instead of poring over Excel wins

This is what the winner says: In the end, Michael Jarman from Toronto won. He is the Director of Modeling.

In an interview with CBC, he says: He has now reached a point in his career where he no longer creates the models himself, but has junior employees do it while he sits in meetings himself. That’s why the victory calms him down a little – he can obviously still do it.

Regarding the WoW task, he said: He doesn’t play the MMORPG himself, but the task was pretty cool. You would have received an 8-page manual, so you already knew what was coming. The audience was quite “electrified” this year.

The world champion says: E-sports on Excel are actually very accessible, it’s a lot of fun and you learn so much from it:

The Canadian probably doesn’t care about the $5,000 prize money, but he wants to hang the cool world championship belt on his wall.
