At least six people, including at least one child, have died in a heavy fire at a boarding house in Romania.

According to the Romanian rescue service, 26 people were staying at the guesthouse, located in the town of Tohani, north of the capital Bucharest, when the fire broke out on Tuesday morning.

Initially, the death toll was four, but at lunchtime rescue workers on site confirmed two more fatalities. There are also a number of missing people, but it is unclear how many. According to the authorities, however, at least 18 people managed to get out of the sea of ​​fire, and two of these are being treated for burns.

The fire was extinguished shortly after lunchtime, but during the evening the search for the missing was still ongoing.

There is no information yet on what caused the fire.
