On the occasion of the International Day to Combat Violence Against Women, the “Féminicides Algérie” collective presented a damning report on Saturday. The study is mainly based on cases reported in the local press. According to this collective, what the victims have in common is that they were targeted because they were women or girls.

Stabbed, throat slit, killed by firearm, or burned alive… Since 2019, at least 261 women have been victims of femicide in Algeria. Mothers, half of them. 16 were pregnant.
According to the Féminicides Algérie collective, nearly 80% of these women were killed by a member of their family. Their spouse, in more than half of cases. Some, police or military, used their service weapon.
Among the reasons given by the murderers to explain their actions: jealousy, mental disorders or supposed honor killings. Nihal, for example, a 19-year-old girl, was killed a year and a half ago by her relatives because she was pregnant out of wedlock. Most of these assassinations take place in a closed environment, at home or at work.
The Féminicides Algérie collective denounces the shortcomings of the Algerian judicial system which does not sufficiently protect women against this violence. And which sanctions some of their authors too lightly.
