At least one person has died and many have been injured after a vehicle drove into a crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg.

The police confirm the incident, and the driver is said to have been arrested. According to local media, a large car drove into the Christmas market and then zigzagged its way through the market-goers.

The newspaper Volksstimme writes that the driver was stopped by the police and arrested when he tried to turn the car around and drive back.

The police in Magdeburg state on X that “extensive police operations” are underway at the Christmas market, which has now been closed to the public. The entire inner city of Magdeburg must be cordoned off. According to Bild newspaper, the police are looking for explosives at the Christmas market.

Magdeburg is located in the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt in the former East Germany, approximately 15 miles southwest of Berlin.

In 2016, a terrorist drove a stolen truck into a crowd at a Christmas market in Berlin. 13 people were killed and 67 were injured.
