At least five dead during campaign rally in Mexico

It was in the state of Nuevo Leon in northern Mexico that a stage collapsed during a campaign meeting for the Civic Movement (MC) party on Wednesday evening, local time.

At least five people are said to have died and another 50 people were injured in the accident, says Nuevo Leon’s governor Samuel García.

The Mexican presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez, who participated in the campaign, writes on X that he is “okay” after the incident, but that he has visited a hospital.

“The only important thing right now is to take care of the victims of the accident,” he writes.

Álvarez Máynez adds that the accident was caused by a strong wind that caused the stage to collapse.

Mexico holds presidential elections on June 2.
