The death toll from floods and landslides following heavy rains in southern Brazil has risen to at least 75.

Over 88,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and more than 100 people are missing.

More than 3,000 soldiers, rescue personnel and volunteers have been working frantically in recent days to save people stranded in the floods. In many places the electricity has been knocked out and access to running water has been lost.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva has promised that the government will provide all the necessary resources for reconstruction.
