In Sudan, at least thirty people have died after a dam broke, says the UN on Monday after leaving the local authorities. According to preliminary information, the number of victims may be much higher. Up to 200 people may still be missing.
The destroyed dam was the main source of water for the Red Sea port city of Port Sudan, and the city is now threatened with water shortages.
Sudan’s Ministry of Health said on Monday that at least 132 people have already been killed in floods and torrential rains this year. At least 20 villages have been destroyed and the homes of 50,000 people have been shattered or damaged.
An exceptionally strong rainy season is currently underway in Sudan, which has brought floods mainly to the northern and eastern parts of the country. Although floods occur every year in Sudan, their effects are especially bad this year due to the civil war that has been going on for almost a year and a half. Millions of people have fled the fighting to flooded areas.
According to the Sudanese authorities and the UN, the rains have also brought with them a bad cholera epidemic. The World Health Organization WHO under the UN previously said that well over 11,000 cholera infections have been registered in the country since July.
