The collision between a freight train and a passenger train occurred late Tuesday evening in central Greece, north of the city of Lárisa.
At least 26 people have died in a collision between a passenger train and a freight train in Greece, the country’s rescue authorities say.
In addition, it is said that at least 85 people were injured in the accident, of which at least 25 were seriously injured.
– The evacuation is still ongoing. The conditions are very difficult due to the heavy collision between the two trains, said a representative of the rescue authorities Vasílis Vathrakogiánnis.
The trains collided late Tuesday night in central Greece in the municipality of Témpi, north of the city of Lárisa.
According to the authorities, several train carriages derailed due to the collision and the carriages also caught fire.
The rescue authorities have said that they have extinguished the fires.
– It was a very strong collision. This is a terrible night. The scene is difficult to describe, the governor of the region of Thessaly Kóstas Agorastós said in an interview with a Greek television channel.
According to the governor, the first two carriages of the second train were almost completely destroyed.
According to the railway company that operated the train, there were 350 passengers on the passenger train on its way from Athens to the city of Thessaloniki when the collision occurred.
At least 250 passengers who survived the collision were evacuated by buses to the city of Thessaloniki.
The cause of the collision is not yet known.
