Another 338 people have been evacuated in the coastal region north of São Paulo. It is unclear how many were injured and missing after the storm.
Images from the city of São Sebastião show heavy flooding with floating debris from houses swept away in the landslides. 60 centimeters of rain fell in 24 hours in the city, the authorities said. That’s more than double what normally falls in a month.
— We have not yet assessed the extent of the damage. We are trying to save the victims, Mayor Felipe Augusto told local media.
A state of emergency has been declared in five cities along the coast in the state of São Paulo. The military has been deployed to assist in the rescue work.
