At least 19 people have died in connection with floods and landslides in the state of São Paulo in Brazil, TT reports.
338 people have been evacuated in the coastal region north of the city of Sao Paulo, local authorities said in a statement. It is unclear how many are missing after the storm.
Images from the city of São Sebastião, located 20 miles north of São Paulo, show heavy flooding with floating debris from houses swept away in the landslide. 60 centimeters of rain fell in 24 hours in the city, the authorities said.
– We have not yet assessed the extent of the damage. We are trying to save the victims, Mayor Felipe Augusto told local media.
A state of emergency has been declared by state governor Tarcísio de Freitas in five cities along the coast. The military has been deployed to assist in the rescue work.
