At least 16 people have died in a Russian missile attack on a market in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian officials say.
The attack was carried out in the town of Kostjantynivka in the Donetsk region near the front. One child was among the dead. At least 31 people are known to have been injured.
At least 30 market stalls were damaged in the fire caused by the attack. The impact also hit nearby shops, a pharmacy, and an administrative and residential building. There were a lot of people on the square and on the terraces next to it.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi called the attack an act of evil and warned that the death toll could rise.
– Russian terrorists attacked the usual market, shops and pharmacies. They killed innocent people, Zelenskyi wrote on the messaging service X, formerly Twitter.
– Those who know the area know that it is a civilian target, Zelenskyi said later.

It is apparently the bloodiest Russian attack on civilian targets in Ukraine in months.
The front line is about 20 kilometers from Kostjantynivka. The town of Bahmut is less than 30 kilometers away.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived for a visit to Kiev almost at the same time as Russia struck a civilian target.
During his visit, Blinken is expected to announce a new support package of more than a billion dollars for Ukraine.
