At least 16 people, including several children, died on Saturday when an overloaded bus overturned on a bridge northeast of the Nicaraguan capital Managua.
In a televised address, the country’s vice president Rosario Murillo says that another 25 people were injured and that around 70 were on board.
Murillo, who is married to the highly controversial president Daniel Ortega, says the accident happened in the town of Rancho Grande.
– We are deeply affected by this accident, she says.
Work on the identification of the victims continues.
Pictures in local media show the yellow bus impaled by the bridge’s metal railings. Several bodies are laid out on the road next to the bus wreck.
