In Espoo, on the campus of Aalto University, a rally was held in the afternoon for the rights of women in Iran. There were approximately a hundred people there.
The event organized by the Campus Rally for Iran network featured several speeches highlighting the weak position of women in Iranian society.
One of the speakers at the event was a civic activist Sanna Saastamoinen-Barrois.
– I cannot understand how trained policemen and soldiers can beat young girls to death with sticks. Absolutely shocking things happen there. And for God’s sake. You can’t do the same, Saastamoinen-Barrois said.
The demonstration in Espoo was part of a wider protest. Today, more than a hundred university campuses around the world have organized demonstrations in support of Iranian women.
In Iran, there have been protests against the country’s administration for more than two months. The protests began after the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died after first being arrested by the chastity police. Iranian authorities have denied abusing Amin.
The unrest in Iran is the most widespread since the 1979 Islamist revolution. According to human rights activists, at least 450 people have died in the protests and more than 18,000 have been arrested.
