Asylum law also divisive among Utrecht VVD factions

The Asylum Act

On November 8, the VVD faction voted in favor of the bill from State Secretary for Justice and Security, van der Burg. With the law, the minister wants to ensure that there is a better distribution of asylum seekers per municipality in the Netherlands. This is because municipalities can currently refuse requests from the central government.

Part of this law is that municipalities that voluntarily place at least a hundred asylum seekers in a reception center for a period of five years will receive 2500 euros per asylum seeker as a reward. With this law, the government wants to encourage municipalities to receive asylum seekers.

Minister van der Burg hopes that the law will come into effect from February 2023.
