Assault and fire in basement in Rinkeby – one to hospital

At 22.20 on Friday evening, the police received a call about a loud bang in Rinkeby in north-west Stockholm.

Once at the scene, heavy smoke could be seen coming from a basement to a multi-family house.

The police suspected that something detonated in the basement, causing a fire to break out. Later in the evening, it was still unclear what happened at the scene.

– We are not at all sure that it is an explosion. It is starting to point in some other directions, says police spokesperson Daniel Wikdahl.

A man in his 40s was injured and taken to hospital by ambulance.

– The man has been beaten in connection with the scene.

The police did not want to go into the extent of the man’s injuries, but stated that he could be heard in the hospital.

Several people inhaled smoke

The police have started a preliminary investigation into public destruction, attempted murder and the Act on Flammable and Explosive Goods.

– We are working on getting more information about what happened in the basement. We can’t let the police down there right now, there is still heavy smoke and the rescue service is working with smoke divers.

Residents in the multi-family building were housed to protect against the heavy smoke build-up.

Nine people inhaled smoke and had to be checked by the medical service.

– That was enough, they didn’t have to go with them to the hospital, says Daniel Wikdahl.

At 11:30 p.m. the fire in the basement was extinguished by the emergency services.

No one is arrested.
