The issue of tax-funded school breakfasts and summer holiday lunches for children has sailed higher and higher on the political agenda recently.
As recently as May, Huddinge municipality introduced free breakfast for all students in primary school. And in Botkyrka municipality, such a reform was introduced a year ago. The Social Democrats in Botkyrka introduced school breakfast as an option last year.

“Has increased considerably”
Since seven months ago, the students at Askebyskolan have been offered breakfast every day before school.
– We saw that there was a great need as there are many students who are hungry when they come to school in the morning, says Nabil Belkacem.
Belkacem believes that this could be due to several things. On the one hand, the children may have missed eating breakfast at home, and on the other hand, many families find it difficult to offer a satisfying breakfast.
– The number of students who come has really increased considerably. Apart from the fact that the need is great, there are probably many people who enjoy eating breakfast with their friends.
