ASEAN fails to advance Burma peace plan

Same actors, same scenario: ASEAN unable to agree on the Burmese file. On the last day of its regional summit, the organization of Southeast Asian countries made no progress on the implementation of the peace plan supposed to be imposed on the Burmese military.

For two years, ASEAN has clung to its reference text, the agreement concluded in April 2021 with the head of the Burmese junta, Min Aung Hlaing. It consists of five points: the countries of South-East Asia demand an immediate end to the violence in Burma, the establishment of a process of dialogue with all the political parties, the possibility of bringing in aid humanitarian aid in the country, as well as the appointment of an ASEAN special envoy to negotiate with all parties.

The Burmese putschists signed this document, but never respected it. And the Indonesian President Joko Widodo can only note the stalemate of the diplomatic channel: ” I must be honest, on the application of the five-point consensus, there has been no significant progress… Our organization must regain its unity, in order to arrive at a formula that allows us to move forward on this file. »

In the short term, hard to believe. Indonesia is due to cede the rotating presidency of Asean to Laos next year, far from being reputed to be aggressive towards the Burmese generals.
