When Beatriz Flamini entered the 70-meter-deep cave in Granada in November 2021, Russia had not invaded Ukraine and the covid pandemic still had a tight grip on the world.
Last Friday she came out to another world. It was all part of an experiment on social isolation that was closely monitored by researchers – but without any direct contact, BBC reports, among others.
— I have been silent for a year and a half and have not spoken to anyone but myself, Flamini said during a press conference on Friday, according to the BBC.
Flamini was 48 years old when she entered the darkness. She has spent the time working out, drawing and knitting. She plowed through 60 books and 1,000 liters of water was consumed, according to the research team.
After day 65, Flamini lost track of time. But she never missed the sun.
“I didn’t feel anything when I saw the light because it felt like I had just walked in there,” she said according to The Guardian.
Loneliness – no problem, but everything was not always easy. Once the cave was hit by a flying invasion and she herself fell victim to an intense craving for fried chicken and potatoes.
