Jouke herself is very early in the woods a few days a week. “That’s part of my job,” he whispers at the crack of dawn. “Then the animals are already awake, but not startled yet and then I can clearly see how the game is doing”. Hopperus Buma does the fauna management voluntarily, his ‘real’ job is at a large consultancy firm. Wouldn’t he rather have become a forest ranger as little Jouke? Laughing: “Maybe, maybe this is what suits me best. I think that applies to all volunteers in this area. Commitment to nature, that’s where the passion comes from”.
As a volunteer fauna manager, Jouke walks day and night in the woods: ‘I feel responsible for the nature around me’
