Charlotte Baris: It is barely 10 a.m. when several yellow vests approach the Arc de Triomphe in the heart of Paris. This morning in December 2018, a few demonstrators sang the Marseillaise, while the situation was already tense along the Champs-Elysées.

Around the monument, there are more and more of them surrounded by the police. Demonstrators begin to tear up paving stones from Place de l’Etoile, before throwing them at the CRS, who respond with charges and tear gas. Confusion reigns. Some try to protect the tomb of the unknown soldier, while others spray paint the feet of the Arc de Triomphe. At the end of the afternoon, we discovered the extent of the damage inside the monument.

For hours, days, all these images play in a loop on the continuous news channels. Since the start of the mobilization, the yellow vests have been constantly in the news. Journalists are increasing the number of live broadcasts during demonstrations and reporting throughout France. But they are also criticized, even targeted, by the participants. During the yellow vest movement, the entire relationship with the press was turned upside down…
