Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka beat the American in the US Open final Jessica Pegula set 7–5, 7–5.
It is Sabalenka’s third grand slam victory and first US Open victory, playing with a neutral status. Previous victories Sabalenka has grabbed at the Australian Open.
In the exciting final, Pegula, who lost to the world number two, was in a grand slam final for the first time. Pegula is ranked sixth in the world ranking.
However, Pegula did not give in easily, but fought herself from a 0–3 deficit to the lead of the second set, before Sabalenka stormed past her.
– I am speechless. I was so close to winning the US Open so many times and finally I got it, the 26-year-old Sabalenka said after the match.
ESPN’s when the game doesn’t go the way Sabalenka wants, she tries to tell herself that it’s just a tennis match. He said he tries to remind himself that he can control his emotions and that he just needs to focus on what it takes to win the match.
Final opponent Pegula said he noticed this.
– He played a big game in big moments, Pegula said to ESPN.
Victory came through hard lessons
Last year, Sabalenka reached second place at the US Open and in 2022 and 2023, she reached the semifinals.
– I just remember all those hard losses here at the US Open, when it was said that I would see the reason later. And now I see the reason, Sabalenka told ESPN after the award ceremony.
– I had to go through all those things and hard lessons to be able to hold this beautiful trophy. I think I’m the happiest person in the world right now, the winner continued.
The final played in New York was watched by 23,000 spectators. Among others, the winner of the 100-meter Olympic gold in Paris was seen in the audience Noah Lylesan NBA star Stephen Curry as well as multiple Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton.
