During the war, Truus van Lier delivered illegal newspapers, messages and weapons. She also helped Jews to hiding places and she infiltrated the NSB and Wehrmacht in Amersfoort. On September 3, 1943, she shot dead the chief of police, Gerard Kerlen, in Utrecht. The NSB member was about to arrest a group of Jews and resistance members.
