Scientists have revealed that the low-calorie artificial sweetener called “xylitol” can cause heart attack and stroke. According to the study published in the “European Heart Journal”, researchers examined 1,157 blood samples of patients treated for heart disease between 2004 and 2011 and the blood samples of 2,100 people at high risk of heart disease.
Xylitol is a frequently used ingredient in chocolate candy, candy, mints, diabetes-friendly foods and oral care products, especially chewing gum.
Researchers have determined that the artificial sweetener xylitol, used in many products such as chewing gum and toothpaste, can cause blood to clot more easily. They determined that clots can cause a heart attack when they reach the heart, and can lead to a stroke when they reach the brain.
Dr. from the research team. Stanley Hazen, in his statement to CNN, pointed out that xylitol is given as an alternative sweetener to people with diseases such as obesity and diabetes, and warned that this could have fatal consequences.
Pointing out the similarity of the results of the research conducted for xylitol with erythritol, Hazen emphasized that the presence of high levels of xylitol in the blood of those at risk of heart disease doubles the risk of suffering from these diseases.
Hazen stated that it is normal for sugar to increase glucose levels by 10-20 percent, and pointed out that when healthy volunteers were given drinks containing xylitol, their glucose levels increased 1000 times.
In June 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified aspartame, one of the artificial sweeteners, as “possible carcinogenic” for humans and announced that it is safe to use as long as the daily intake is not exceeded. (AA)
