Arsonist put on probation for three years

A Brantford man who participated in a series of arsons around southern Ontario was sentenced in Ontario Court to the equivalent of 10 months in jail and placed on the longest possible probation period of three years.

Daniel Ryan Perry, 34, was charged with torching barns, farm equipment and, in one case, a school bus in Brant County. The crimes took place in the spring of 2019.

In court, he pleaded guilty to one count of arson, damaging property.

Perry also pleaded guilty to helping to steal a Polaris ATV from a Brant County barn in 2016.

Justice Colette Good gave Perry the usual enhanced credit for his 206 days of pre-trial custody and released him with probation orders to get assessed for counselling.

Repeated attacks on woman net time-served sentence

A 26-year-old Brantford man was ordered to get help for domestic violence and addiction issues when he appeared in Ontario Court.

Charged with multiple counts of assault and threatening behavior, Austin Alexander Huszczo pleaded guilty to assault with choking, assault with a weapon, threatening death or bodily harm and breach of release orders.

Huszczo repeatedly attacked the same woman in November 2021, including with a Swiss Army knife, and tried to strangle her.

He was released with orders to stay away from the woman but police were called to a public argument in the wee hours of Dec. 24 last year and found them together near East Avenue.

When officers tried to arrest Huszczo, he resisted.

Justice Colette Good gave Huszczo a year’s credit for the 233 days he had served since his arrest and ordered him to serve a two-year probation where he’s to have no contact with his victim or be within 100 meters of anywhere she lives or works.

Good also ordered that he seek counseling for domestic violence and addiction issues.

Assaults with bottle, freezer door send man to jail

An Ohsweken man pleaded guilty to repeatedly assaulting a woman.

Gregory Allan Hill, 42, was arrested six times over 16 months and charged with assaulting the woman with a bottle and freezer door, among other things.

Hill pleaded guilty to two assaults in 2021 and breach of probation in 2020.

Justice Gethin Edward gave Hill credit for already serving seven months in jail and sent him back for another five months. Hill was placed on probation for two years.
