Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t want to play a sci-fi role for two reasons
As the action star told Entertainment Weekly in 2014, he initially turned down director James Cameron’s offer of a role. There were two reasons: On the one hand, the cyborg didn’t speak enough for him, but on the other hand, he didn’t want to play a villain.
I said, ‘No, no, no, the guy only has 17 lines of dialogue.’ I did not want. I was building my career and wanted to play a hero instead of a villain. But Cameron said he would offset evil deeds by staging them. They would be excused by saying I was a cool machine. So cool that people were cheering for me.

The coolness argument dispelled Schwarzenegger’s doubts. Whether Cameron’s production really weakens the terror of the Terminator remains to be seen. As “cool machine” he definitely stylizes him. When the fighting machine goes about its mission in sunglasses and a leather jacket, it’s just as iconic as a chain-smoking Bogart, snappy sayings and everything.
