With his new film, Captives, the French director immerses us in 19th century Paris in the Pitié-Salpêtrière asylum. Women deemed “crazy”, prostitutes, or even rebels and strong-headed people were interned there, often under duress and sometimes for their entire lives. Its heroine, Fanny (Mélanie Thierry), is a young woman who pretends to be crazy and is voluntarily interned to find her mother.
