Trading is difficult “, concedes a participant. ” Hard and lively “adds another. ” It’s a marathon “says a third. From its opening, the Chadian pre-dialogue organized in Qatar has been suspended because of too many people around the discussion table. Since Sunday afternoon, therefore, the politico-military groups have been chaining working sessions to try to appoint together the ten delegates who must represent them.

But the equation is not simple. Currently, 52 politico-military groups are represented in Doha. Some weigh more than others politically and militarily and not all have the same agenda or the same objectives. On the other hand, they all want to be sure that their voice will carry.

Monday evening, the main rebel groups remained confident: “ That the discussions are stormy, it is quite normal in this kind of meeting “says a participant. ” But we are working on our points of convergence “, he explains.

Qatar deems this step necessary, as it considers that it cannot effectively play its role of mediator with more than a hundred people around the table. Consultations between armed groups should resume on Tuesday with the aim of appointing ten delegates before Wednesday morning to negotiations can resume.
