Armand Duplantis surprises everyone after the EC gold – now opens up to compete in a completely different athletics branch: “Wants to break the Swedish record”

Armand Duplantis did not disappoint at the European Athletics Championships.
New EC gold, new championship record and 600,000 kroner richer.
But now he surprises everyone right after – with a most unexpected announcement.

Another championship and another gold medal for Armand Duplantis. On Wednesday evening, “Mondo” did what everyone expects these days.

Duplanti’s success

The Swedish world star won the pole vault final with ease and not only with a new European Championship gold, he also broke a new championship record with 6.10 meters. That height was also enough to secure the prize money of almost SEK 600,000, then he tried with three jumps for a new world record but unfortunately failed.

He is still only 24 years old but has already won an Olympic gold, four World Cup gold, four European Championship gold and broken eight world records. But after the new gold medal, Duplantis makes a statement that surprises everyone.

Mondo in new branch

Namely, Mondo has concrete thoughts about competing for Sweden in a completely different athletics discipline than pole vaulting. He is considering starting to compete in the sprint relay as well.
– I would have loved to do that. It could have been great fun, but then we get to gather a good team – because then I really want us to have a good chance at the Swedish record, he says in an interview with Dagens Nyheter.
– It feels like it is possible if Henrik (Larsson) runs well, if Isak (Hughes) runs well and if we get a good fourth person. Then it is possible.

The current Swedish record for 4×100 meters is from 1996 and is 38.63 seconds. Duplantis is also recognized as fast, which is a big part of his success as a pole vaulter, but the question is whether he can keep up the pace in the 100 meters.

This year, however, it will be tough with both the EC and the Olympics during the summer. But an Armand Duplantis in a relay at Finnkampen 2025 sounds like a realistic plan.
– I wish the timing was better this year. The Finnkampen is just at the last Diamond League competitions, before the Diamond League final, says Duplantis to the daily newspaper.
– If it had been the last competition for this year, maybe. But maybe for Finnkampen next year – then it could have been fat.
