Armand Duplantis won a well-deserved WC gold.
But dad Greg also got an unexpected medal.
Now Mondo sends a neat pass to the parents.
Several of Armand Duplanti’s competitors jumped at the absolute peak of their abilities. But it was never very dramatic. Mondo hadn’t even torn once when it was clear that he had won his second straight WC gold.
The big change
After securing the competition with his jump of 6.10, Duplantis chose to set the bar at a new world record height, but it didn’t work this time. However, Duplantis could look forward to his fifth straight major championship gold. And this time there was also something very special about the medal that Duplantis was awarded.
New for this year’s Athletics World Championships is that the coaches are also awarded medals. Mondo’s coaches happen to be his parents, Helena and Greg, and for the first time mom and dad Duplantis got a medal of their own to hang around their necks, and to take home to Louisiana, where they usually live. And the big change pleased Duplantis.
