He won EC gold and broke a new championship record.
During the medal ceremony, Armand Duplantis excelled even more.
– I have learned now, he says to Aftonbladet.
Armand Duplanti’s supremacy is rare in the sporting world, and when the European Championship was decided over the weekend, it went exactly as it used to. Duplantis has barely entered an event he hasn’t won in recent years, and the Munich events were no exception.
New matchless record
Duplantis entered the final with questionable conditions, at least if you look at external factors. It was raining and colder than expected – in other words, not optimal pole vaulting conditions – but that didn’t matter much to the all-time leader.
Duplantis went flawlessly through the final and had already secured her gold medal in 5.95. He then jumped further and managed 6.05, which means a new championship record. It also means that Duplantis won a whopping three championship medals during the year, when he won WC gold both outdoors and indoors. Add to that that he is also the reigning Olympic gold medallist.
“Have learned”
But it wasn’t just during the competition itself that Duplantis excelled. Yesterday, the day after the competition, Duplantis received the gold medal – and he impressed by singing the entire text of the Swedish national anthem. This despite the fact that only the melody was played.
– Yes, I’ve learned all the words and verses, but then I don’t know if I’m pronouncing everything correctly. But I try, he tells Aftonbladet.
Armand Duplantis was, understandably, pleased with the weekend and the gold. Especially since it was actually a rare experience.
– It was different, but a very nice feeling. This is the first time I am defending a gold. In the past I have only won my first ones. But it felt good. It’s something I want to do again.
