First Europe’s best.
Now the best in the whole world.
Armand “Mondo” Duplantis has a chance at the prestigious award.
Earlier this week it was clear that Armand Duplantis is one of three finalists in the ‘Athlete of the Year’ award, by ‘European Athletics’, i.e. the European Athletics Federation. He is pitted against the middle distance runner Jacob Ingebrigtsen and the long jumper Miltiadis Tentoglou. Now he is challenging for an even bigger prize.
The world’s best
The news comes after Mondo had another fantastic season.
Two new world records were set, at 6.22 and 6.23 meters. Another WC gold was secured in Budapest, Hungary. Duplantis also won the Diamond League, where in the final he set the world record of 6.23.

Those achievements could lead to Mondo being named the World’s Best Track and Field Athlete in 2023. It is ‘World Athletics’ – the international organization for national athletics federations – that has nominated the Swedish-American for the prestigious award. If Duplantis wins, it will be the third time he has achieved the feat, having also won in 2020 and 2022.
