Sweden can imagine forgoing the entire athletics EC in Turkey.
Now Armand Duplantis goes out and clearly announces that he will not compete.

The political situation is extremely tense between Sweden and Turkey. In the midst of the turbulence with burnt flags, there has been strong concern among the Swedish national athletics team.

During a press conference on Tuesday, the federation captain announced Kajsa Bergqvist that Sweden may withdraw from the athletics EC in Turkey. Now comes the next announcement that the biggest star of them all is refusing to compete.

The pole vault star Armand Duplantis has decided not to compete in the indoor EC. But it is not because of the charged political situation.
– No, it has nothing to do with politics, says “Mondo’s” manager Daniel Wessfeldt to Sportbladet.
– But it was never included in the planning. He has not wanted to say no definitively, but wants to wait and see how he feels. He doesn’t take anyone else’s place.

Won gold in 2021
On the competition program, Duplantis has chosen to focus on his own gala in Uppsala on Thursday, February 10 in Berlin, February 15 in French Lievin and February 25 in Clermont Ferrand.
– Then we’ll see what he decides about the indoor EC. But there is a long outdoor season ahead this summer that doesn’t end until mid-September. And he wants to get started with the basic training ahead of it, manager Wessfeldt admits.

Already in 2019, Mondo turned down the indoor EC in Glasgow, when he was still studying in the USA. After that, he had a great performance and won gold in the indoor EC in Torun 2021.
