Armand Duplantis is the big star in the athletics EC.
But now he vents his displeasure and reveals his disappointment with the championship.
– It should be better, Duplantis admits to Dagens Nyheter.
Swedish world star Armand Duplantis is in place in Rome to chase another medal. On Monday, he made it through the pole vault qualification with ease with just one jump to advance to the final.
Duplantis in the EC
“Mondo” comes to this year’s athletics EC as an eight-time world record holder and of course the goal is to go for 6.25 meters after securing the gold medal. The last time he competed in Rome was four years ago, when it was 6.15 meters for Duplantis.
– I haven’t been here since 2020. I think it’s a new track, but it’s a very nice stadium. I hope for good with the audience, says the 24-year-old to Dagens Nyheter.

However, this year’s championship has received a lot of criticism after the audience has failed in the stands. The European Athletics Federation has even sold the tickets, but still the Stadio Olimpico has been empty, and there has been a lot of talk.
Mondo disappointed
Armand Duplantis is clearly disappointed by the weak turnout and is now airing his displeasure.
– It should be better. I have no idea what it will be like. I hope it gets better anyway. It would be very sad if it were the same for us, says Mondo, who is going for the gold on Wednesday evening.

The world’s best pole vaulters are known to always grow and perform better with strong support from the stands. Mondo always wants to put on a show for the audience and he will need an extra push to go for another world record to the collection.
– You get more energy and more adrenaline. It gives a little more and it becomes more fun. It will be so much better if there is a lot of audience. Then there will be a little more “push”, says Duplantis to the daily newspaper.
