Armand Duplantis can now win the prestigious title after the giant criticism

The Swedish pole vault star Armand Duplantis can be named the world’s best male athlete in 2024 – regardless of discipline.
After last year’s criticism, the International Association of Athletics Federations has reconsidered the prestigious award.

Last year was the first time that the International Athletics Federation departed from the principle of appointing only one male and one female winner. Then three winners were named for both sexes in the categories of running disciplines, technical disciplines and competitions outside the arena.

Duplanti’s criticism

The union was criticized for this. Even the athletes were unaware of the split when the winners were presented at a gala in Monaco.
– That they didn’t tell us anything before, that’s what makes you a little pissed off. We were misled, said Armand Duplantis later to Expressen.

The association chooses to keep the arrangement this year as well, but now a new vote will take place. There, athletics lovers worldwide can vote to nominate the best male and female athlete of the year in 2024 – regardless of discipline.

Armand Duplantis and the Greek long jumper Miltiadis Tentoglouwho took Olympic gold, are the two male finalists in the technical disciplines category. This year, Duplantis has won Olympic gold outdoors in Paris, World Cup gold indoors and beaten his own world record three times, which currently stands at 6.26 meters.

Won three times

He took home the prize for the technical disciplines last year – the 24-year-old has also been crowned the world’s best male track and field athlete twice alone (2020 and 2022). This year, Duplantis has also won EC gold outdoors and at the end of October he was named Europe’s best male athlete in 2024.

The next phase of voting takes place during the period 4–10 November. All winners will be presented on December 1 in Monaco.
