The demonstration was organized by a broad alliance on the left and grassroots movements, some of them with links to the ruling coalition government. The demonstration train blocked a main street on its way down to the Plaza de Mayo, where the government and the president are based.
Some demanded a general basic income while others called for benefits for pensioners. Protesters also opposed austerity measures announced by the government earlier this week.
The measures have been described by the Minister of Finance Silvina Batakis as a way to balance the public accounts, in accordance with an agreement the country has made with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). According to this, Argentina will repay a 2018 loan of $ 45 billion to the IMF.
