Argentinas president broke lockdown fines

During the corona pandemic, Argentine President Alberto Fernández broke the current restrictions by organizing a birthday dinner for his partner. This later resulted in a criminal investigation.

Now a federal judge has approved that the president and his partner donate three million pesos – equivalent to almost 250,000 kronor – to vaccine research, in exchange for the criminal charges being dropped.

When the birthday dinner was held, there was a strict lockdown in Argentina, and all kinds of gatherings were forbidden. Fernández, himself a professor of criminal law, has said that it was not a “malicious act” but “negligence and negligence”.

According to some local media, the president will now take out a bank loan to pay the donation.

A picture published at the dinner, with dozens of guests, caused strong reactions in the country and criticism of the president – both from the opposition and Fernández’s own party.
