Argentina in turn hit by surge in Omicron cases

With our correspondent in Buenos Aires, Theo Conscience

In front of a test center in Buenos Aires, around thirty people are waiting under a blazing sun. ” Fortunately, here they distribute water. And I haven’t been waiting so long, 15, 20 minutes said a man.

20 minutes of waiting, but in front of Ramon Barrios, security guard, the line is still long. “ There have been contaminations in my company, so they have all asked us to get tested so that we can work peacefully. »

Over the past week, Argentina has recorded nearly 800,000 new cases, a record since the start of the pandemic. So, in front of the test centers, the lines are getting longer.

And people sometimes lose patience worries Daniela Lopez. A surgical mask over her FFP2, this nurse admits to being a little overwhelmed. “ There is a lot of work, we never stop… Almost half of the tests are positive. And many of those carrying out the tests have the Covid themselves, there are only two people left to do the tests. »

Nationally, nearly seven out of ten tests come back positive. The number of deaths and the occupancy of intensive care units remain relatively low, but are increasing. For the moment, the government does not envisage new restrictions.
