Åre municipality risks SEK 800,000 in corporate fines for the release of wastewater

As SVT reported earlier, the municipality of Åre has reported a large number of wastewater discharges to the police in recent years. This year alone, around 50 criminal charges have been filed.

Prosecutors have now notified Åre municipality of suspicion of 22 environmental crimes during the period 14 April 2020 to 17 May 2024.

The prosecutor also demands that the municipality pay a corporate fine of SEK 800,000.

– We are aware of the major shortcomings we have with our wiring network. By making these shortcomings visible, we can create a clear basis for future measures. We are actively working on the renewal of the wiring networks. Among other things, we are working with an action program in Duved and carrying out important initiatives in the industrial area in Järpen, says Mattias Gyllenswärd, technical manager at Åre municipality, to the municipality’s website.

Now the municipality has one month to answer whether they accept the company fine or not. If not, there may be a question of a trial in court.
