It is two political arch-rivals – Lula of the left and Bolsonaro of the right – who are pitted against each other in today’s decisive election round.
It has been described as an unusually dirty campaign. On Saturday, the conflict reached a new level when one of Bolsonaro’s closest allies – Congresswoman Carla Zambelli – chased a Lula supporter with a gun drawn.
Incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro is trailing in public opinion, but his support has been difficult to gauge. He is gathering votes among the upper and middle classes – with the growing group of revivalist Christians – and with the country’s important farmers.
The challenger, former president Lula da Silva, has made a political comeback after the Supreme Court acquitted him of the corruption charges that landed him in jail.
He has strong support among the country’s low-income earners.
