Season 2 of Arcane begins on Netflix Saturday, November 9. At a press conference, the creators of the series gave some information on what to expect in the sequel.
Two seasons, 8 years of production, 700 people, three studios: these are the colossal figures behind Arcanaanimated series adapted from League of Legends which ends this month on Netflix. Three years after the end of season 1, season 2 is put online on the platform streaming on Saturdays November 9, 16 and 23, 2024. These will be the last in the series, which will mark the end of an era for Fortiche Studio and Riot Games, creators of the series.
In season 2 ofArcanaPiltover and Zaun are recovering from Jinx’s attack. Who survived? What is certain is that while the rich city declared itself in favor of reconciliation at the end of season 1, this attack risks once again exacerbating tensions between the two cities. For her part, Vi will once again try to bring her sister back on the right path… unless confrontation is inevitable.
The fans understood this with season 1, Arcana is definitely not an animated series like any other and is extremely costly in terms of time and investment, hence the three-year wait between the two seasons. In a conference in the presence of journalists and French animation students in Paris, before the release of season 2, the producers of the series detailed the process of creating the new episodes: “up to a year can pass between writing the script of an episode and its production”, detail Pascal Charrue, founder of Fortiche and co-director of season 2, Bart Maunoury, executive creator, Kianna Manker, producer and Amanda Overton, script editor.
Half a second of series produced per day and per host
Although the series does not use motion capture at all, the animators film themselves to detail the scenes before animating them, in order to adopt a “semi-realistic” style. “On average, we produce half a second per day per presenter,” they said. And to tease season 2, which will be “in continuity with the first graphically speaking, but better”. Just that.
However, such ambition entails numerous costs. According to information from the American media Variety, Arcana would have cost more than 250 million dollars for its two seasons (production and promotion, a cost which has however not been confirmed by Riot Games), becoming the most expensive animated series in history with “only” 18 episodes. The English-speaking media, however, assures that the series will not be profitable for the studio, and will allow it, at best, to cover its costs.
Season 2 ofArcana will be the last
Arcana will indeed end at the end of this season 2. In a video posted on social networks, Christian Linke, co-creator of the series, came to give explanations on this choice: “We had an ending very precise in mind from the beginning of the creation of the series, which is why the story Arcana will conclude with its season 2″.
But fortunately, this does not signal the end of projects to adapt League of Legends into animated series: “Arcana “is just the beginning of our journey to tell a bigger story, and it’s just the beginning of our partnership with the wonderful Parisian animation studio Fortiche,” explains Christian Linke.
“Vi and Jinx’s arc has evolved so much, way beyond anything we could have dreamed of, and we want to give the same treatment to other champions [de League of Legends]”, he explained, before confirming that Riot and Fortiche are already working on new series and film projects featuring new champions of the famous online game. So, who is Darius, Twitch , Urgot, Camille or another LOL character will be the subject of a new series? Anyway, at a conference in Paris, it was confirmed that “other projects are planned in collaboration with Riot Games” .
According to information from Variety however, the series Arcana should have lasted five whole seasons. But in view of the cost of seasons 1 and 2, the Riot Games and Fortiche program had to be modified, and the number of episodes revised downwards. This cost is explained, in particular, by labor and budget overruns, reports the American media.
